Újabb adatok a Dunakanyar avar kori benépesüléséhez: Beszámoló a Spar áruház kapcsán feltárt avar kori temetőről

New Data on the Pannonian Avar Population of the Danube Bend: Report on the Avar-Period Cemetery Excavated in Connection with the Spar Supermarket

Between 2023 and 2024, the Ferenczy Museum Center conducted an excavation in Szentendre, near the suburban railway (HÉV) terminus south of the Bükkös Stream and west of Road 11, ahead of the construction of an underground parking lot for a new Spar supermarket. In terms of archaeological periods, Roman-era sites dominate this part of the town: it is primarily known for the auxiliary fort of Ulcisia Castra/Castra Constantia, the remains of its associated auxiliaris vicus, and various related burial grounds at discrete locations. As an unexpected result of the excavation, a section of an Avar-period cemetery was uncovered. Across the area affected by the excavation—approximately 3,300 square metres—a total of 330 archaeological features were excavated, of which 316 were Avar-period burials, and 14 were Early Bronze Age and Early Iron Age settlement features.

Although the discovery of the cemetery was unexpected, it was foreshadowed by findings in the early 1990s, when inhumations were documented in nearby streets. While these early rescue excavations did not allow for far-reaching conclusions, they clearly indicated the presence of a cemetery. The new excavation results have helped us to put an estimate on the extent of the cemetery, and successfully establish a portion of its western boundary. By a conservative estimate, the total area of the cemetery could be up to 2 hectares.

The cemetery fits well within the category of large-scale row-grave cemeteries from the Avar period. The deceased were placed in shaft graves, while individuals buried with horses were laid in side niches (alcoves) constructed in the wall of the shaft. Most members of the community were buried in wooden chests, as indicated by cuts and post structures observed in the grave pits. In addition, numerous other features pointed to the use of grave covers and other built structures within the graves.

The equestrian burials (15 in total), representing the elite of the community, yielded numerous harness mounts, bits, stirrups, arrowheads and spearheads. Grave 102 contained the harnessed skeleton of a young horse, while Child Grave 33 featured a type of partial equestrian burial.
