Ádám Mitterhoffer, His Brother and Sisters

Ádám Mitterhoffer, a judge from Vác, died in 1836 at the age of eighty-nine. Like many other families, the adult children and grandchildren of the deceased took legal action to resolve the disputes surrounding the distribution of the estate. His universal heir was his son, Ádám Mitterhoffer, a merchant, and his subsequent heir was Ádám’s son, Ferenc. Ádám Mitterhoffer Jr’s brothers and nieces took joint legal action in various courts to challenge his inheritance. They seemed to have joined forces against their brother, as is evident from their having joint legal representation: the husband of one of the granddaughters is listed in the court documents as the lawyer for his mother-in-law and her two siblings.
In the absence of other documents (letters, diaries, contracts), the study relies solely on court records to determine to what extent the relationships between the eldest brother and his siblings can be uncovered, and what can be ascertained about changes in the relationships between these (half-) siblings following their departure from the parental household and the subsequent death of their father.
