Six artists—painters János Aknay, József Baksai and Péter Bereznai, graphic artist Győző Sárkány and sculptors János Kalmár and Tamás Szabó—approach the study of the continuous dialogue between memory and material through different media and ways of thinking. As a whole, the exhibition creates an intermedial, in-between zone where, instead of unfolding in some shared formal expression, the notion of memory marks a meeting point; a zone where, as we wander among the visual utterances of painting, photography, drawing and sculpture, we simultaneously perceive the depth of personal pasts, the openness of cosmic spaces, the rich variations of the stratification of form and transformation, and the subtle impressions of everyday experiences. The show is a comprehensive selection of works produced in the past five to ten years. The length of this period both reveals the paths followed by the individual artists and demonstrates the directions in themes and forms that define their current thought processes and modes of expression. The exhibits thus look back and open new perspectives at the same time, summarizing the most important artistic endeavours in the past decade. The montage of structurally arranged nature scenes; the meticulous, philosophically profound explorations of the movement of material and form; the sensitive, expressive approach to time, memories and individual narratives; the constructive-geometric structures and the expressive portraits enter into a personal and universal dialogue with each other: they speak of man’s place in the world in the common language of painting, graphic art and sculpture.
